This past summer, the 225th General Assembly approved the General Assembly Committee on Ecumenical and Interreligious Relations (GACEIR)’s recommendation that the “Study Document on Denouncing Antisemitism and Islamophobia” be distributed throughout the PC(USA) for study and reflection.

What is the study document? Why does it matter? How does the study document connect to ecumenical and interfaith work already happening? What are some practical materials for congregations to use for engaging this study document?

On November 15, 2022, at 7:30 p.m., the Outlook will engage these questions through the “Love your neighbor” webinar. Join Teri McDowell Ott for a conversation with members of the writing team behind the “Study Document on Denouncing Antisemitism and Islamophobia.”

Panelists include:

Whitney Wilkinson Arreche — a PC(USA) pastor and Th.D. candidate at Duke University, and chairperson of GACEIR

Sabrina Slater — a pastor at Christ the King Fellowship Presbyterian Church and vice-chairperson of GACEIR

Nanette Sawyer — associate pastor for discipleship, small group ministry and interfaith relations at Fourth Presbyterian Church of Chicago

Anne Weirich — a retired PC(USA) pastor who sat on the PC(USA)’s Committee on Ecumenical and Interreligious Relations for eight years

Heidi Hadsell — a professor of social ethics and former president of Hartford Seminary

So Jung Kim — a pastor and associate for theology in the Presbyterian Mission Agency’s Office of Theology & Worship

Dianna Wright — the director of Ecumenical & Ecclesial Ministries within the Office of the General Assembly who has her Doctor of Ministry degree from Columbia Seminary in African American Spirituality

The conversation will include introductions, a presentation from the writing team, and a Q&A session moderated by Teri McDowell Ott. The goal of the webinar will be to summarize the actions taken by the General Assembly in creating and approving the “Study Document on Denouncing Antisemitism and Islamophobia,” add context to why these actions are important, and provide practical tools for churches and individuals to engage in this work.
